DALLAS PROGRAMS AND CALIFORNIA'S PROJECT INFO FOR AIDING YOUTHS AND FAMILIES IN TROUBLE ARE DESCRIBED, AND FUTURE COUNSELING NEEDS ARE PROJECTED IN THIS AUDIO TAPE CASSETTE.
Abstract
THE DALLAS PROGRAMS ARE ORIENTED TOWARDS THE CARE OF JUVENILES, PROBLEMS AND THE AVOIDANCE OF SCHOOL DROPOUTS. ONE PROGRAM PROVIDES EMERGENCY TELEPHONE COUNSELING AND SPECIAL INPATIENT SERVICES FOR YOUTHS WITH SEVERE PROBLEMS. ALSO, YOUTHS WITH EMOTIONAL PROBLEMS CAN RECEIVE PARTIAL HOSPITALIZATION SERVICES; AND FAMILY COUNSELING, SOCIAL WORK, AND PSYCHOLOGICAL SERVICES ARE AVAILABLE. ANOTHER PROGRAM DEMONSTRATES THE ADVANTAGES OF EDUCATION, AND A THIRD PROGRAM ALLOWS SUSPENDED STUDENTS TO REMAIN IN THE SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT IN SPECIAL CLASSROOMS. PROJECT INFO IS A DIVERSION, INTERVENTION AND PREVENTION PROGRAM FOR JUVENILES INVOLVED IN UNACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOR. A 7-WEEK COMMUNICATIONS COURSE IS OFFERED TO YOUTHS AND THEIR FAMILIES, BASED ON THE BELIEF THAT GOOD COMMUNICATIONS AMONG THE MEMBERS OF A FAMILY PREVENT UNACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOR. FAMILIES ARE TAUGHT WHAT CAN BLOCK COMMUNICATION, HOW TO LISTEN, HOW TO UNDERSTAND ANGER, HOW TO MAKE DECISIONS, AND HOW TO DEVELOP A SUPPORTIVE PROGRAM AT HOME. SOME PARTICIPANTS ARE SELF-REFERRALS, AND OTHERS ARE REFERRED BY SCHOOLS AND LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES. FUTURE COUNSELING PROBLEMS WILL PROBABLY ARISE OUT OF JUVENILES' DIFFICULTIES TO COPE WITH THE GROWING COMPLEXITY OF GOVERNMENT, MODIFIED LIFESTYLES RESULTING FROM MORE LIMITED RESOURCES, INCREASED SPEED OF TECHNOLOGICAL CHANGE, AND POPULATION CHANGES IN TERMS OF AGE, ETHNIC GROUPS, AND MALE AND FEMALE ROLES. SPEAKERS ARE A HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL AND TWO MEMBERS OF THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF SCHOOL COUNSELORS. FOR RELATED MATERIALS, SEE NCJ 67673-75 AND 67677-81.
