RESEARCH INTO THE IMPACT OF STREET ENVIRONMENT ON THE DISTRIBUTION OF DEVIANT BEHAVIOR.
Abstract
RESULTS OF THE PROJECT WHICH TOOK PLACE AT LJUBLJANA (SOCIALISK FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF YUGOSLAVIA) INDICATE THAT 25 PERCENT OF ALL KNOWN OFFENSES WERE COMMITTED ON 0.9 PERCENT OF THE TOTAL CITY LAND AREA. FURTHERMORE, THE RESULTS SUGGEST THAT THESE OFFENSES ARE PREDOMINANTLY COMMITTED BY THE LOWER CLASSES. THE AUTHOR PUTS FORWARD TWO QUESTIONS - IS DEVIANCE IN PUBLIC REALLY TYPICAL FOR THE LOWER CLASSES? - IS THE HIGHER INTENSITY OF FORMAL SOCIAL CONTROL IN THE CENTER OF THE CITY A FACTOR IN THE HIGHER RATE OF KNOWN DEVIANT BEHAVIOR? IF THE LATTER ASSUMPTION IS CORRECT, THEN THIS MAY, ACCORDING TO THE AUTHOR, ACCOUNT FOR THE INCONSISTENCY OF RESEARCH DATA IN DIFFERENT RESEARCH PROJECTS, AS THEY DO NOT ALWAYS TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE DIFFERENCES IN THE LEVEL OF OFFICIAL SOCIAL CONTROL BETWEEN ONE AREA AND ANOTHER.
