This overview of juvenile delinquency in India focuses on the role of family, school, and juvenile correctional programs in both promoting and preventing delinquency.
Abstract
Statistics on delinquency in India document an increase of 84.3 percent in juvenile arrests from 1971 to 1981. Moreover, Indian statistics confirm other research showing that many adult criminals begin their careers in childhood. The authors contend that delinquency is largely a result of character deficiency in children who grow up without proper direction, purpose, and moral restraint. They examine the role of family in socializing the child, the nature of the parent-child relationship, and the influence of broken homes and deviant parents on children. Also considered are consistency and fairness in parental discipline and parental legal liability for a child's misconduct. Actions that schools and recreation programs can take to prevent delinquency are described, as are aftercare services available for juvenile offenders. 23 references.
