This manual is designed to explain to educators the roles that teachers, school counselors, school nurses, special education professionals, administrators, and other school and child care personnel have in the identification, treatment, and prevention of child abuse and neglect.
Abstract
The manual is also intended to complement the training of educators in how they can intervene. The text explains why educators should be concerned with child abuse and neglect, how to recognize when a child has been maltreated, to whom to report, the school's policy, and the procedure to be used in reporting. It also discusses what happens once the report is made and what prevention strategies can be used. The discussion emphasizes that in addition to professional and moral responsibility, school personnel have a unique opportunity to advocate for children in a way that no other adults except parents can. Forms, checklists, figures, glossary, reference notes, list of resource organizations, appended model school policy and sample materials, and 39 references
