THE CANADIAN ASSOCIATION FOR THE PREVENTION OF CRIME (CAPC) RESPONDS TO A TASK FORCE REPORT ON THE ROLE OF THE PRIVATE SECTOR IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE.
Abstract
THE CAPC REJECTS THE TASK FORCE'S RECOMMENDATION THAT THE ASSOCIATION NOT BE ACCEPTED AS LIAISON CHANNEL BETWEEN GOVERNMENT AND THE PRIVATE SECTOR AND THAT A NEW ORGANIZATION BE FORMED TO ASSUME THAT FUNCTION. IT IS ARGUED THAT TASK FORCE MEMBERS WERE UNAWARE OF THE DIFFICULTIES AND COSTS INVOLVED IN CREATING A NEW ORGANIZATION, THAT THE PROPOSED ORGANIZATION WOULD BE ESSENTIALLY A DUPLICATE OF THE CAPC, AND THAT CREATION OF A NEW ORGANIZATION WOULD BE DIVISIVE. THE CAPC PROPOSES TO IMPLEMENT THE FOLLOWING PROGRAMS: A RESOURCE CENTER OF PUBLIC EDUCATION MATERIALS IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE FOR USE BY NONGOVERNMENTAL ORGANIZATIONS; A LIAISON PROGRAM TO PROVIDE COMMUNICATION WITHIN THE PRIVATE SECTOR AND BETWEEN THE PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SECTORS; AND EFFORTS AIMED AT INCREASING CITIZEN INVOLVEMENT IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE ISSUES. A DETAILED ANALYSIS OF THE TASK FORCE RECOMMENDATION TO WHICH THE CAPC OBJECTS IS PROVIDED. --IN ENGLISH AND FRENCH. (LKM)
