This United Nations (UN) report reviews developments in the computerization of criminal justice system functions in member countries and examines the United Nations Crime and Justice Information Network (UNCJIN).
Abstract
One of the most important challenges for UN technical cooperation activities in the statistical and computerized management of criminal justice system functions is to maintain and further develop the institutional capacity of the UN's crime prevention and criminal justice program to effectively respond to requests from member countries for assistance. Information provided by UN member countries about their national computerization infrastructure ranges from outlines of basic computer needs to descriptions of fully elaborated systems that completely integrate criminal justice system management functions. Most member countries have incorporated computerization in various aspects of their criminal justice systems or have considered doing so, and the UNCJIN facilitates the communication and exchange of information and data among member countries. The importance of international cooperation and assistance in the computerization of criminal justice system operations and in the development, analysis, and policy use of criminal justice information is discussed. Future directions in computerization are considered, including elements of an action plan on international cooperation and assistance with regard to statistical and computerized applications. 7 notes
