This report provides an overview of problems associated with the proceeds of transnational crime, based on a preliminary study of the application of such proceeds to the infiltration of legitimate economic activities through the laundering of money.
Abstract
The analysis notes that this form of crime is increasing and amounts to several hundreds of billions of dollars each year. The study considers the problems from the perspectives of governments and financial institutions and sets out certain basic principles to be followed in developing effective and efficient strategies and policies for the control of the proceeds of crime. It also discusses the role of the United Nations in promoting international cooperation in this field and makes recommendations for the consideration of the United Nations Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice.
