This review of United Nations (UN) work in crime prevention and criminal justice highlights the need for regional and international cooperation, particularly in the context of political and socioeconomic changes, and suggests a more active role for the UN's Committee on Crime Prevention and Control.
Abstract
The 42nd session of the UN General Assembly was marked by a desire by member states to strengthen crime prevention efforts. The UN's Economic and Social Council established a Special Commission in 1987 to study intergovernmental structures and functions and convened in 1988 to establish priorities for international cooperation in crime prevention and criminal justice. The council identified the following priority activities: establish a global crime and criminal justice information network; strengthen interregional advisory services; ensure full coordination of activities related to crime prevention and criminal justice in the UN system; strengthen public information activities; and promote action-oriented research. The UN role in setting crime prevention and criminal justice standards is addressed, as well as the recommended establishment of an advisory council of scholars and scientific organizations to strengthen international crime prevention cooperation. Future UN directions in crime prevention and criminal justice are identified. 28 notes
