In September 1986, the Michigan State Police (MSP) tested 11 new patrol vehicles as part of their procurement policy.
Abstract
Each vehicle was subjected to six major types of tests. Results are weighted to reflect the relative importance of each attribute as related to MSP operational requirements. These tests include vehicle dynamics, acceleration, top speed, braking, ergonomics and communication, and fuel economy. The MSP scores each vehicle's overall performance, reviews the manufacturer's bid prices, and calculates a composite score. Vehicles tested included the 5.7 liter (L) Canadian and U.S. models of the Chevrolet Caprice; the 4.3 L Chevrolet Caprice; the 5 L Dodge Diplomat; the 5.8 and 5 L Ford Crown Victoria; the automatic and 5-speed, 5 L Ford Mustang; the 2 and 4 barrel, 5 L Plymouth Gran Fury; and the 2.5 L Plymouth Reliant. Test results are presented in tabular form, together with a description of test objectives and methodology. 7 tables.
