Annotation

This paper reviews the criminal justice system in Russia from historical and contemporary perspectives.

Abstract

Greater liberalization and the dissolution of the Central Soviet Government will have a significant impact on Russia's future criminal justice program. The author argues that the program will likely lean toward incorporating a more continental crime reduction ideology rather than a Western-style Common Law that emphasizes legal process rather than crime reduction. The author discusses, inter alia, the role of the procurator, the police, the KGB, the courts, criminal defense, and corrections. Chart, endnote, references
