Students most at risk of dropping out exhibit low self- esteem, lack of confidence, and feelings of helplessness. Behaviors characteristic of dropouts present the classic responses associated with punishment, which in this case is school.
Abstract
Since its establishment in the early 1970s, 70001 Training and Employment Institute has helped more than 60,000 student dropouts complete their education and find a job. The 70001 program encompasses job readiness training, education upgrading, job placement assistance, motivational activities, and follow-up services. The programs, totaling more than 70 in 23 States, are administered by local colleges, universities, and community organizations. 70001 is currently designing a dropout prevention program to provide support to at-risk students. The program will cover life management skills, career exploration, and employability training. Both the dropout recovery and prevention programs emphasize improving student self-esteem and confidence through skill mastery and frequent positive reinforcement. 11 references
