Research on terrorism is surveyed to identify major research themes, note promising areas for continued work, and suggest some overlooked resources that can offer potentially useful information to researchers.
Abstract
Research on terrorism includes both general studies that address broad cultural and social conditions and specific studies of terrorist incidents or groups. General studies have included historical analyses, studies of governments and economies, and comparative group studies. Specialized studies have included preincident studies, including target analysis or causal analysis; incident studies, which include encyclopedic examinations of types of incidents or groups and tactical analyses of the handling of ongoing incidents; and postincident studies of victims, responses, and methods of public education regarding terrorism. Among weaknesses of existing research is the lack of generalizability across groups and societies or excessive generality. Among information resources whiuch have been underused are regular communiques and newsletters produced by terrorists, books written by terrorists, and self-generated histories of terrorist movements. Fifty-eight reference notes are provided.
