These nine articles examine juvenile delinquency trends in Illinois, juvenile violence causes, promising early intervention and juvenile delinquency prevention programs, juvenile records, and other aspects of delinquency prevention and control.
Abstract
Individual articles note that juvenile delinquency prevention should start with efforts to prevent and deal with child abuse and neglect and dropping out of school. Other articles report on studies revealing that quality early education and care in preschool and beyond help increase later employment opportunities and reduce crime, that caseloads in the Illinois juvenile justice system have stabilized in recent years after marked growth in the 1980s and early 1990s, and that an offender-based tracking system is needed for studying juvenile crime. Further articles focus on State laws that have broadened the scope of laws relating to the transfer of juveniles to adult court for certain crimes and the opening of juvenile offense records. Other articles focus on juvenile justice reform in other States, a new information network for Illinois victim services agencies, and a campaign to prevent motor vehicle theft in Illinois.
