This packet contains materials for the promotion of the 2009 Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) in April, whose slogan is “Respect Works,” a theme for the prevention of sexual violence in workplaces.
Abstract
The rationale for this theme is that whatever the context for interaction among persons--whether at home, work, or school--healthy relationships are based on consideration and respect. This is believed to be the essence of promoting social change that results in less sexually violent behavior. The featured event for the 2009 SAAM is the workshop entitled, “Making a Difference: Your Role in Sexual Violence Prevention.” The workshop is designed to show participants how to exert a positive influence on their communities by assuming responsibility for the health and safety of those with whom they interact, which includes sexual violence prevention. As a tool for the workshop, this packet includes a CD with PowerPoint slides. A booklet that offers suggestions for SAAM activities includes descriptions of awareness events in addition to the workshop, including a letter-writing campaign, a run/walk, an awareness display at a busy central location in the community, and bookstore and library displays and readings. Also included in this packet is a Workplace Outreach Guide, which contains a Workplace Sexual Violence Fact Sheet and an Employer Checklist that lists actions employers can take to prevent sexual violence in the workplace. Other items in this packet are a palm card in English and Spanish that defines “sexual violence,” explains how respect prevents sexual violence, and offers suggestions for action, as well as a poster that features a workplace theme with silhouettes of various kinds of workers.
