Abstract
A total of 4,487 persons, 4,311 males and 176 females, were confined in Wisconsin's adult correctional facilities on June 30, 1982, an increase of 11.7 percent over June 30, 1981, and an increase of 32.5 percent for males over the 5-year low of 3,254 residents reported on June 30, 1979. The median length of sentence decreased slightly from a 5-year high of 6.1 years in 1980 to 5.8 years in 1982. The proportion of nonwhite males decreased from a 5-year high of 43.2 percent in 1980 to a low of 41.5 percent in 1982. Milwaukee County commitments declined from a high of 49.2 percent of the population in 1979 to a low of 43.4 percent in 1982. The proportion of males classified as assaultive offenders decreased from 44 percent in 1980 to 34.2 percent in 1982; however, during the same period, the proportion of males classified as assaultive and sex offenders rose from 12.4 percent to 18.6 percent, and those classified as assaultive, sex, and drug offenders rose from less than 1 percent in 1980 to 3.3 percent in 1982. The number of females inmates reached a 5-year high of 176 on June 30, 1982, an increase of 33 percent over the low of 132 reported on June 30, 1982. New admissions decreased to a 5-year low of 92.6 in 1982. The median length of sentence for females decreased from a high of 4.8 years in 1980 to a low of 3.7 years in 1982.
