This instructor's guide is composed of teaching modules built around topics related to security in multifamily housing, with emphasis on the security responsibilities of housing managers.
Abstract
Deterring criminal victimization and creating and maintaining a sense of safety through widespread community involvement in planning and implementing a security program are the two overarching purposes of the lesson modules. The first module expands on traditional notions of security in its discussion of planning and administering a security program, and the second module defines security in its aspects of reducing crime and the fear of crime. In the third module, protective devices, technological detection devices, municipal police personnel, and security personnel are discussed as components of a comprehensive security system, and the fourth module discusses ways in which residents can become involved in the development of a comprehensive security system. The fourth module explores the interrelationships between the layout of physical environment and security ('defensible space'). The concluding module discusses 'turf reclamation,' an approach to security based on strengthening a neighborhood's sense of cohesion as a foundation for participation in a security program. Each module contains an introduction and lists teaching objectives, module content, teaching methodology, and resources.
