This review of progress in research on juvenile delinquency emphasizes that contributing factors, rather than causes, should be the focus of research.
Abstract
The findings reported are primarily from studies of developed nations. An overview is given of the research activities of the United Nations Social Defense Research Institute and the United Nations Regional Institutes for the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders. Research efforts and findings on four general topics are summarized: (1) the link between crime and urbanization, especially in terms of the movement of youth without employment prospects from rural areas to cities; (2) the relationships among urbanization, drug abuse, and youth crime; (3) the use of leisure time and the impact of the mass media on youth crime; and (4) special problems of foreigners, migrants, and ethnic or religious groups. Limitations of the research as a basis for policymaking for crime prevention and control and areas needing further research are discussed. Footnotes.
