Research in Criminology and Corrections is beset with several problems of far reaching significance.
Abstract
These problems, in turn, have hampered its development, minimized its contribution to knowledge and, have given rise to skepticism regarding its role as a major instrument of policy planning and programme implementation in the realm of criminal justice administration. This paper addresses itself to the task of examining the current status of criminological and corrections research by way of knowing where things went wrong, where researchers faltered and where the consumers of such research in various subsystems of criminal justice administration lacked in appreciation and regard for the contribution researchers were capable of making. The obstacles identified and the measures suggested emanate from the discussion on the purpose of research in criminology and corrections, its central themes of inquiry, its methodology, its organizational constraints and, finally the criticism directed against it.
