THE AUTHOR ARGUES THAT INCREASING COOPERATION BETWEEN THE POLICE AND THE UNIVERSITIES, WITH RESEARCH AS ONE SIGNIFICANT PART, CAN BE TO THE MUTUAL BENEFIT OF BOTH INSTITUTIONS.
Abstract
INTERCHANGE BETWEEN THE POLICE AND THE UNIVERSITIES WOULD BE A TWO-WAY PROCESS WITH ACADEMICS SCRUTINIZING THEIR THEORIES IN TERMS OF THE 'REAL' WORLD AND POLICEMEN TESTING THEIR PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE AGAINST INTELLECTUAL GENERALIZATIONS. SUGGESTED AREAS OF RESEARCH INCLUDE HISTORICAL ANALYSIS OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE POLICE, ORGANIZATION THEORY, INFORMAL SOCIALIZATION TO PROFESSIONAL NORMS, TRANSACTIONAL ASPECTS OF THE POLICEMAN'S SOCIAL WORLD, AND COMPARATIVE ASPECTS OF DIFFERENT STYLES OF POLICING IN DIFFERENT CULTURAL CONTEXTS. THIS ARTICLE ALSO BRIEFLY CONSIDERS THE SOCIAL SERVICE ROLE OF THE POLICE AND HOW IT IS AFFECTING THE CHANGING FUNCTIONS OF POLICE IN MODERN SOCIETY.
