This "practitioners' brief" provides criminal justice practitioners with an overview of the wide range of available research on family violence and highlights a few major studies and their practical implications.
Abstract
The brief contains "bottom line" information from articles written by researchers about their own work, or in several instances about other researchers' work on subjects of immediate concern to practitioners: arrest policies, protection orders, battered women defense strategies, sentencing, batterer treatment, child sex abuse, and child testimony. Each research account includes the purpose of the research, the research methodology, research findings, and implications for various criminal justice practitioners who deal with such cases. The research is presented under major sections entitled, "Child Abuse, Sexual Abuse, and Neglect," "Elder Abuse," and "Spousal and Partner Abuse." Research on child abuse, sexual abuse, and neglect focuses on child testimony and sentencing for child sexual abuse offenders. Research pertinent to elder abuse addresses the working relationships between social service agencies and police agencies as well as guidelines for State courts handling cases that involve elder abuse. Research relevant to spousal and partner abuse focuses on civil protection orders, arrest, prosecution and defense, and batterer treatment.
