This study attempts to obtain accurate representations of regional and national crime activities in Germany.
Abstract
Police experts from eight German districts were asked what data they required to gain an accurate portrayal of the crime situation in their region. Using those responses, the researchers developed an instrument for gathering data in regional crime analysis. In several regional model analyses, they solicited information not only from the usual crime statistics and demographic records but also from local police officers, the local population, social agencies, and criminological research. The resulting regional reports, though labor intensive, were highly useful for both police and criminological research. A joint effort of both police and nonpolice sources in establishing more such regional studies would not only lead to more accurate knowledge of supraregional criminal activities, but also to more effective crime repression and prevention. A detailed bibliography and the model studies are appended.
