The agenda of the Tenth United Nations (UN) Congress on the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders, held in Beirut, Lebanon, in November 1998, dealt with promoting the rule of law and strengthening the criminal justice system, international cooperation in combating transnational crime, effective crime prevention, and accountability and fairness in the criminal justice process for both offenders and victims.
Abstract
The Congress was attended by representatives and experts from UN member states and observers from specialized agencies and intergovernmental organizations. Many speakers stressed the importance of the Congress in providing a forum for exchanging experiences, data, and other information among criminal justice officials, specialists, experts, and researchers. In addition, Congress workshops covered the prevention of corruption, computer crime, community involvement in crime prevention, and women in the criminal justice system. Action-oriented recommendations are offered that relate to crime prevention and criminal justice themes addressed at the Congress. Annexes contain a list of Congress participants and a list of relevant documents.
