The Task Force on Crisis Management in Community Corrections reviewed the state of crisis management in community corrections and made recommendations for improvement.
Abstract
The problems besetting crisis management in community corrections include a low state of preparedness, no formal contingency planning process, inadequate staff morale and resource base, low public credibility, and a poor capacity to respond. While many successes were identified, the ability to prevent critical incidents from becoming crisis situations was not high. Recommendations included an adoption of an interactive model based on conciliation, planning, response, and recovery; the creation of a community planning capacity made up of criminal justice professionals; more effective communications with other members of the criminal justice system; and development of new systems of staff support.
