The Fourth European International Conference on Education in Prisons was held in Sweden in 1993 to explore personal barriers experienced by inmates and to determine if prison education meets their needs.
Abstract
Papers presented at the conference addressed inmate training at an Australian prison, the need to incorporate self-confidence building in prison education, staff education in Estonia's prison system, educational trends in prison education in Finland, and the development of prison education programs in closed institutions in a time of limited resources. Papers also considered a prison education project implemented by the UNESCO Institute for Education, health and physical education programs in Ireland, library services for inmates, and the role of education in the sentence planning process in Northern Ireland. Finally, papers looked at criminal activity after release from prison, the role of education in probation, the development of competencies and life skills through prison education in Norway, the rehabilitation of drug addicts, the link between prison education and social reintegration, education in the humanities for inmates in Spain, educational activities in Turkish prisons, occupational skills training, transition services, prison college programs, and literacy outreach.
