Data on arrests for domestic violence in California revealed that the number of these arrests rose steadily from 31,886 in 1988 to 63,636 in 1997 and then declined 10.6 percent to 56,892 in 1998.
Abstract
The rate of arrests per 100,000 population has also increased steadily over the last 10 years. The factors underlying this increase may include public awareness as influenced by high-profile cases, women's resource centers, new legislation, and other factors. The percentage of males arrested for domestic violence decreased from 94 percent of the total in 1988 to 83.5 percent of the total in 1998. Shifts in the percentages of total arrests for each racial/ethnic group coincided with population shifts. Arrests of white persons decreased from 40.8 percent of the total in 1988 to 34.3 percent in 1998. Arrests of Hispanics increased from 32.9 percent of the total in 1988 to 40.6 percent of the total in 1998. Arrests of black persons decreased from 22 percent of the total in 1988 to 19.2 percent of the total in 1998. More than 99 percent of the persons arrested for domestic violence. Adults between ages 18 and 39 years amounted to 83.5 percent of the total in 1988 and 77.1 percent in 1998. Tables, figures, and appended tables
