This report presents statistics on detained prisoners in England and Wales in 1992 and notes that an average of 10,090 prisoners, or 22 percent of the total average prison population, were awaiting trial in correctional institutions and police cells.
Abstract
Of these inmates, 8,076 were awaiting trial, including 7,805 males and 271 females. In addition, 1,902 males and 112 females were awaiting sentence. A decade previously in 1982, the average daily number of remand prisoners was 7,432, which amounted to 17 percent of the average prison population of 43,772. Most of the prisoners on remand have been charged with nonviolent offenses. A disproportionately high number are from ethnic minority groups. Current projections indicate that the number of remand prisoners is likely to continue to increase more rapidly than the sentenced prison population. Tables and 5 references
