STREET CRIME PATTERNS IN THE GERMAN CITY OF HAMBURG ARE ANALYZED IN TERMS OF RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN THE CRIME SCENES AND OFFENDER RESIDENCES IN ORDER TO HELP IMPROVE POLICE EFFECTIVENESS.
Abstract
THIS 1979 STUDY DEALS WITH THE PATTERNS OF STREET CRIMINALITY FOR THE OFFENSE CATEGORIES OF SEX, ROBBERY AND THEFT COMMITTED IN THE FREE CITY OF HAMBURG DURING 1978. THE FIGURES REPORTED HERE ARE THOSE CONTAINED IN THE LOCAL POLICE CRIME STATISTICS FOR 1978. INCLUDED WERE ONLY SOLVED CRIME CASES WHICH TOOK PLACE IN 1978 (CRIMES SOLVED IN 1978 BUT COMMITTED IN PREVIOUS YEARS WERE NOT EXCLUDED). ACCORDING TO THIS REPORT, STREET CRIMES ACCOUNTED FOR 34 PERCENT OF ALL CRIMES COMMITTED IN HAMBURG. WHILE THE RATE OF CASES SOLVED FOR THE TOTALITY OF CRIMES WAS 41.4 PERCENT, ONLY 8.7 PERCENT OF STREET CRIMES WERE SOLVED. THE NARRATIVE PART OF THIS STUDY IS VERY BRIEF: STATISTICAL TABLES, GRAPHS, AND MAPS ARE PROVIDED FOR ALL TYPES OF DESCRIPTIVE VARIABLES, PATTERNS, AND LOCALITIES AND NEIGHBORHOODS WITHIN THE CITY OF HAMBURG. IT WAS FOUND THAT THREE-QUARTERS OF THE ARRESTED SUSPECTS FOR THE STREET CRIMES UNDER DISCUSSIONS LIVED WITHIN 3 KILOMETERS FROM THE CRIME SCENE. IT MUST BE REMEMBERED, HOWEVER, THAT THE MAJORITY OF STREET CRIMES WAS NOT SOLVED, SO THAT ALL CIRCUMSTANCES ABOUT THEM ARE UNKNOWN. THUS, IT CAN ONLY BE ASSUMED THAT THE MAJORITY OF OFFENDERS COMMIT THEIR CRIMES NEAR THEIR PLACES OF RESIDENCE. --IN GERMAN.
