THE GOALS, OBJECTIVES, AND FIRST 7 MONTHS' ACTIVITIES OF A YOUTH SERVICE CENTER IN A RESIDENTIAL COMMUNITY NEAR RACINE, WIS., ARE REPORTED.
Abstract
SPONSORED BY THE CALEDONIA COMMUNITY YOUTH FOUNDATION, THE CENTER HAS AS ITS GOAL THE DIVERSION OF CALEDONIA YOUTHS FROM THE JUVENILE JUSTICE SYSTEM. CALEDONIA RESIDENTS COMMUTE TO RACINE TO WORK AND TO ATTEND SCHOOL, AND THE CENTER IS THEIR ONLY COMMUNITY FACILITY. THE CENTER HOLDS MONTHLY MEETINGS TO INFORM YOUTHS AND THEIR PARENTS OF RESOURCES AND SERVICES IN RACINE COUNTY. YOUTHS ARE INVOLVED IN PROGRAMMING THE CENTER'S ACTIVITIES, WHICH HAVE INCLUDED PREEMPLOYMENT TRAINING, JOB PLACEMENT, WORK EXPERIENCE, DRUG AND ALCOHOL EDUCATION, REFERRALS TO OTHER AGENCIES, TUTORING, SUMMER PLAYGROUND PROGRAMS EMPHASIZING SOCIALIZATION SKILLS, DAY-CARE SERVICES FOR PRESCHOOL CHILDREN, AND A VARIETY OF COMMUNITY GATHERINGS AND EVENTS. THE CENTER ALSO SERVES AS A MEETING PLACE FOR PROBATION OFFICERS AND THEIR CALEDONIA CLIENTS. IN ITS REFUNDING REPORT TO THE WISCONSIN COUNCIL ON CRIMINAL JUSTICE, THE CENTER NOTES THAT IT PROVIDES THE COMMUNITY'S YOUTHS WITH A FOCUS FOR THEIR ACTIVITIES AND OFFERS YOUTHS AND ADULTS AN OPPORTUNITY TO COME TOGETHER FOR SOCIAL, RECREATIONAL, AND EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES. RECOMMENDATIONS FOR IMPROVING THE CENTER ARE PRESENTED. A COPY OF A QUESTIONNAIRE USED BY THE CENTER TO SURVEY THE INTERESTS OF THE COMMUNITY IS INCLUDED. (LKM)
