Inmates in the general population, inmates in a therapeutic community for drug abusers, and inmates eligible for the therapeutic community of a single prison were interviewed to determine the extent to which participants in therapeutic communities differ from other inmates in terms of prisonization.
Abstract
The inmates considered eligible for the therapeutic community were either already on a waiting list for it or had completed some other kind of program. The 72 inmates completed interviews that gathered information on four measures of prisonization; demographic characteristics; and convictions for drug law offenses, violent crime, and property crimes. Results revealed that overall, the therapeutic community attains its short-term goal of resocializing the participants' attitudes and orientations. Higher levels of prisonization were associated with lower levels of exposure to treatment. Tables, appended tables, and 28 references (Author abstract modified)
