This report presents statistics on notifiable offenses recorded by the police in England and Wales in the 12 months ending March 2001.
Abstract
Results revealed that the police recorded 5.2 million offenses in the 12 months to March 2001, a fall of 2.5 percent over the previous 12 months. This decline followed a 3.8 percent increase in the 12 months to March 2000. Recorded violent crime increased, but at a slower rate than in the previous year. Violence against the person increased 3 percent, robberies increased 13 percent, and sex offenses declined 1 percent. Burglary and vehicle crime both declined at a faster rate than in the previous year. Burglary declined by 8 percent, including a 9 percent decline in domestic burglary. Thefts of and from vehicles declined by 7 percent. The detection rate was 55 percent for violent crime and 17 percent for property crime. The numbers charged or summoned represented 58 percent of all detections. Both police statistics and the biennial British Crime Survey reveal declines in crime between 1995 and 1999. Thee declines in the surveys were larger than those in the police statistics. Figures, tables, notes, and appended methodological information
