This book presents information on identifying child abuse that is targeted at the mandated reporter, i.e., teachers, as well as counselors, doctors, and child care providers.
Abstract
The chapter on identifying physical abuse discusses conditions that may be confused with abuse, the difference between accidental and inflicted injuries, and the interpretation of abuse injuries. Subsequent chapters deal with burns, child sexual abuse, multiple personalities and dissociative disorders resulting from abuse, Munchausen Syndrome by proxy, neglect and abandonment, and emotional abuse. The book also discusses the cycle of abuse in violent families; legal issues including reporting statutes, litigation, and evidentiary issues; and working with child abuse victims in the classroom. The final chapters explore the relationship between abuse, schools, and the law, and describe programs to prevent neglect and sexual abuse. Chapter references
