MATHEMATICALLY FORMUALTED ECONOMIC MODEL OF CRIME ANALYZING THE EFFICIENCY AND EFFECTIVENESS OF CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS IN THE WIDER CONTEST OF AN INTEGRATED CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM.
Abstract
THE FORMULAS INCORPORATE THE CONCEPTS OF RECIDIVISM AND THE SOCIAL CHOICE OF FINES OR INCARCERATION. THE MODEL INDICATES THAT EMPIRICAL INFORMATION AN THE SUPPLY RESPONSE OF OFFENDERS TO CHANGES IN THE RISK OF CONVICTION AND IN THE SEVERITY OF PUNISHMENT IS NOT SUFFICIENT TO DETERMINE WHETHER SOCIETY IS ACTING IN A MANNER CONSISTENT WITH MINIMIZING THE SOCIAL COST OF CRIME.
