Data from 10,058 individuals and 28,394 release events recorded in the Delaware Department of Correction computer files between 1981 and 1994 were used to study prison and jail recidivism rates in the State during this period.
Abstract
The data were used were to provide baseline statistics on recidivism among those sentenced to more than 1 year and released from prison and those released from any term of incarceration in jail or prison. The data revealed that 12.4 percent of offenders released from prison returned to prison within 6 months, 19.3 percent returned within 1 year, 29.6 percent returned within 2 years, 34.6 percent returned within 3 years, 37.7 percent returned within 4 years, and 39.6 percent returned within 5 years. In addition, 23.1 percent of offenders released from a jail or prison sentence returned to jail or prison within 6 months, 37.5 percent returned within 1 year, 56.1 percent returned within 2 years, 66.7 percent returned within 3 years, 73.5 percent returned within 4 years, and 78.3 percent returned within 5 years. Findings also indicated recidivism in relation to types of crime, sex, ethnicity, age, and repeat offenders. Figures and tables
