This report presents data-processing information, a variable description list, and the codebook for the Federal Bureau of Justice Statistics solicitation of recidivism statistics on inmates nationwide.
Abstract
The study involved a survey of State department of correction and State identification bureaus to determine the feasibility of collecting data directly from these sources and obtaining supplemental data on multi-state offenders from the FBI. With this design, a more comprehensive and complete data base for national statistics on recidivism could be obtained. Eleven States were selected: California, Florida, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, and Texas. The introductory section of this report provides data-collection description and structure, sampling information and procedures, weighting information, file-structure description, codebook information, and information on processing by the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research. Computing standard errors are also discussed. The variable description list provides the code numbers and names of all data variables. The codebook presents all data processing information for each variable. Appended notes
