Several positive developments have occurred in the United Nations (UN) during the past year to prevent the sexual exploitation of children.
Abstract
The UN Commission on Human Rights and the Subcommission on Prevention of Discrimination and Protection of Minorities decided to appoint a special staff member to consider issues related to the sale of children, child prostitution, and child pornography. The Commission also decided to transmit a proposed program of action to governments, specialized agencies, intergovernmental organizations, and nongovernmental organizations. In addition, the UN General Assembly unanimously adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child on November 20, 1989. By early May 1990, this convention had 86 signatures and 5 ratifications. The Convention will enter into force 30 days after 20 countries have ratified it. The continued commitment of nongovernmental organizations to UN efforts and the integration of their own efforts within the framework of UN conventions can help ensure that these efforts succeed in achieving their goals. 19 references
