The article details the work of the Association of South-East Asian Nations in dealing with illicit drug traffic.
Abstract
Established in 1967 by the Bangkok Declaration, the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN) includes Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Brunei. The countries represented by ASEAN have adopted various legislative and administrative procedures to combat illicit drug traffic. Some of these measures include preventive detention for drug traffickers, the death penalty for drug trafficking, confiscation of illegally acquired assets from drug traffickers, the denial of passports to drug offenders, and the offering of rewards for information leading to the seizure of illicit drugs and the arrest of individuals involved in drug trafficking. Additionally, ASEAN member countries hope to develop a common legislative program for drug control, to promote drug law enforcement training, and to encourage the exchange of information among drug law enforcement agencies.
