Annotation
This videotape describes skills and positive alternatives to avoid the use of marijuana.
Abstract
This videotape features teenagers (not professional actors) giving their views on marijuana and their reasons for not using it. It also interviews some former addicts, who discuss marijuana's negative effects on their education and on activities such as music and sports. The speakers describe the importance of not hanging out with users, and ways to state anti-marijuana thoughts and philosophies without being judgmental of peers who use marijuana. The young people discuss why kids start smoking marijuana, how some people get addicted to it, its effects on the body, and the media's mixed messages on marijuana use, advising against it one minute and glamorizing its use the next. An accompanying Teacher's Guide suggests ways to use the videotape as part of prevention education programs. The guide includes facts about marijuana's harmful effects, a teacher lesson plan, learning objectives, key concepts of a prevention program, student projects, parent guidelines, and prevention resources.
