One of the Department of Education's goals for the year 2000, adult literacy and lifelong learning, states that every adult American should be literate and possess the knowledge and skills necessary to compete in a global economy.
Abstract
The five primary objectives associated with this goal including involving every major American business in strengthening the connection between education and work, giving workers the opportunity to acquire the skills necessary to adapt to new technologies and working conditions, increasing the number and availability of quality programs designed to serve part-time and mid-career students, increasing the proportion of students who enter college and complete their degree, and increasing the proportion of college graduates who can think critically and communicate effectively. The research conducted in support of this booklet found that more adults are completing more years of education than before, adults are increasingly learning at all ages and in varied settings, technology presents opportunities for helping adults learn new skills, and changing work environments require recurrent education for workers. 86 references
