A police officer with extensive experience in investigating violent crimes presents guidelines for use by women in avoiding situations in which a sexual assault might occur and in dealing with dangerous situations.
Abstract
The guidelines emphasize the importance of a positive mental attitude. This includes awareness of the potential for becoming a victim, the ability to say no in uncomfortable situations, common sense in dress, maintaining good physical condition, and accepting responsibility for personal safety. Guidelines on physical and verbal self-defense and the possible use of weapons are included. Home security measures and safety precautions to take when away from home are also listed. The advice also includes suggestions for teaching children about self-protection and a list of signs of child sexual abuse. Guidelines are also given on actions to take after being raped. A summary of California laws on sexual assault, rape statistics from the National Crime Surveys, photographs, and case examples.
