Radio communication can be a critical factor in police and public safety, and technological advances have occurred in digital radio systems.
Abstract
Motorola has developed a new generation of advanced mobile radio systems that have enhanced features and allow operations in both conventional and trunked systems using digital technology. The company's ASTRO system provides improved audio quality over existing analog and digital systems throughout more of the coverage area, spectral efficiency with the incorporation of narrow band channels, advanced signaling and control, integrated voice and data, enhanced encryption, and ease of migration from current analog systems. The New Hampshire State Police began testing the ASTRO system in January 1993. Performance tests in New Hampshire have exceeded expectations, and the long-range plan is to convert all police departments in the State to digital communications.
