These studies determine whether the outcomes of the Casey Family Program foster placements are predictable from factors that could be known at the time the placements were made.

Abstract

The Casey Family Program provides a planned, long-term approach to subsidized foster care for the underachievers of the child welfare system. Two main sources of data were used to construct models: archival material on the child and his or her biological family, and caseworker ratings of various aspects of the child and his or her foster family. The research confirmed that an effective job was being done in placements, the predictors of various aspects of placement outcomes were stable, and it is possible to combine certain characteristics in a multiple regression equation to give meaningful weights to their contributions to placement outcomes. However, the results are based upon information already in hand, and their use for predictive purposes remain to be demonstrated. 27 tables and 13 references
