This article discusses the importance of security as a factor in the success of a shopping center.
Abstract
Security, both the perception and the reality, is as critical a factor as location in determining when and where consumers spend their money. Properly crafted security programs can make a significant contribution to a company's bottom line. While every shopping mall's needs are unique, certain issues pertain to all: the need to gather information, tailor programs to those findings, provide customer service, create a code of conduct, and develop partnerships with law enforcement. A code of conduct plays a valuable role in spelling out what types of behavior will not be condoned in a retail environment. The public posting of these codes helps reassure shoppers that the shopping center is a controlled environment where the shopping experience will not be disturbed by aggressive, illegal, or offensive behavior. The article contains a sample code of conduct which can be used as a guideline by security managers.
