This document summarizes the punishments applicable to crimes in North Carolina, current through the 1992 General Assembly.
Abstract
The introduction contains a review of the 10 classes (A through K) of felonies and their corresponding punishments, as established by the Fair Sentencing Act which became effective in 1981. First-degree murder is the only Class A felony and is punishable by death or life imprisonment. The punishment policy for misdemeanors is reviewed as well. The 64-page punishment chart that follows includes the crimes that appear most frequently on district and superior courts' criminal dockets, with the exception of motor vehicle crimes. The crimes are listed in alphabetical order according to major subject-matter headings; for ease of use, some appear more than once. Each entry consists of name of crime, different variations of that crime, statute number, punishment, and grade of severity. Subject and statute indexes appear at the end of the document.
