THIS GUIDE TO RESEARCH METHODS AS APPLIED TO PUBLIC PROGRAM ANALYSIS SKILLS EMPHASIZES THE RELATIONSHIP OF PROBLEMS SPECIFICATION, DEVELOPMENT OF OPERATIONALIZED MEASURES, AND RESEARCH DESIGN ON STATISTICAL TECHNIQUES.
Abstract
CONCEPTS AND PRINCIPLES OF PROGRAM ANALYSIS ARE CONSIDERED, AND A SYSTEMS APPROACH IS DESCRIBED FOR DEVELOPING A CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK FOR STRUCTURING PROGRAM ANALYSIS. A DISCUSSION IS INCLUDED ALSO ON MEASUREMENT AND DATA SOURCES. THE TEST PRESENTS AN INTRODUCTION TO STATISTICS INCLUDING INFORMATION ON STATISTICAL ASSOCIATIONS AND RELATIONSHIPS, PROBABILITY FUNDAMENTALS, AND INFERENTIAL STATISTICS. SEVERAL SAMPLING STRATEGIES ARE OUTLINED, AND GENERAL RESEARCH MODELS ARE CONSIDERED. PRINCIPLES OF RESEARCH DESIGN DISCUSS EXPERIMENTAL, NONEXPERIMENTAL, AND QUASI-EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN. DISCUSSIONS ON CONSIDERATIONS OF STATISTICAL ANALYSIS AND USE OF ALTERNATIVE DESIGNS FOR RESEARCH MODELS ARE INCLUDED. THE NATURE, TYPES, AND MEASURING TOOLS INVOLVED IN SURVEY RESEARCH METHODS ARE ILLUSTRATED, ALONG WITH METHODS OF ECONOMIC ANALYSIS INCLUDING BENEFIT-COST MODELS AND COST-EFFECTIVENESS ANALYSIS. THE TEXT ALSO CONTAINS A SECTION ON BIVARIATE AND MULTIVARIATE STATISTICAL TECHNIQUES. TOPICS INCLUDE CONTINGENCY ANALYSIS AND RANK-ORDER CORRELATION, ANALYSIS OF VARIANCE, REGRESSION AND CORRELATION ANALYSIS, AND SPECIAL ISSUES AND APPLICATION IN REGRESSION ANALYSIS. EACH CHAPTER PRESENTS STUDY PROBLEMS FOR STUDENTS IN GRADUATE AND UNDERGRADUTAE LEVEL METHODS COURSES. MATHEMATICAL TABLES AND GRAPHS ARE INCLUDED AS WELL AS A LIST OF SYMBOLS. BIBLIOGRAPHICAL REFERENCES AND AN INDEX ARE PROVIDED. (DAG)
