This 12th report of New York State's Psychological Screening Program for Correction Officer Applicants summarizes the program's activities for fiscal year 1996-97 and fiscal year 1997-98 to date, with a focus on February 1996 through September 1997, the time period during which a consultant contract with law Enforcement Psychological Services (LEPS) was in effect.
Abstract
A section on legislative history, intent, and program history notes that the objective of psychologically screening correction officer candidates is to identify those individuals who display psychopathology or other psychological limitations that could significantly impair job performance and effectiveness. A program overview provides information and data on project staffing from 1996 through 1998, applicant processing, and program budget. Another section of the report profiles the various aspects of the assessment program under each of the two successive screening contracts. This section also describes day one psychological tests, candidate evaluation-process criteria, and psychological disqualification criteria for each of the two contractors. Other sections of the report pertain to applicant processing statistics and the annual adverse impact analysis. Data cover total applicants, male applicants, female applicants, and a probationary termination study. The report concludes that the program has operated in compliance with the governing statute during the time period considered and has successfully reviewed the pool of correction-officer candidates required to meet the Department of Correctional Services' personnel needs. 6 tables
