A COMPARISON OF THE CHARACTERISTICS AND BEHAVIOR OF RETARDED AND NONRETARDED OFFENDERS AT PATUXENT INSTITUTION, MARYLAND.
Abstract
IDENTIFICATION OF THOSE WHO ARE TRULY RETARDED AS OPPOSED TO THOSE WHO ARE EDUCATIONALLY DEPRIVED PRESENTS A SPECIAL PROBLEM IN DESIGNING TREATMENT. ACKNOWLEDGING THE SPECIAL NEEDS OF THE RETARDED OFFENDER, SPECIAL EFFORTS ARE MADE TO OFFER A BROAD BASED THREAPEUTIC PROGRAM INCLUDING PSYCHOTHERAPY. ALTHOUGH THE RETARDED OFFENDERS PRESENT A MORE DIFFICULT INSTITUTIONAL MANAGEMENT PROBLEM, EXPERIENCE HAS SHOWN THAT THE RETARDED OFFENDER DOES WELL WHEN INTEGRATED INTO A TOTAL INSTITUTIONAL PROGRAM. RETARDED OFFENDERS REPRESENT 27 PERCENT OF THE INSTITUTION'S POPULATION, BUT 42 PERCENT REMAIN BEYOND THEIR ORIGINAL SENTENCE. REFERENCES.
