This report summarizes the concepts presented and discussed at the conference on Protecting Children and Animals: Agenda for a Non-Violent Future, which was held in Herndon, Virginia, in the fall of 1992.
Abstract
Conference participants included animal protection professionals, lawyers, pediatricians, nurses, theologians, teachers, psychologists, reporters, veterinarians, prosecutors, social workers, and researchers. Conference speakers and discussions addressed research on the common factors in violent acts toward vulnerable populations, research on the early signs of violent behavior, and research on the effectiveness of prevention and treatment programs. The conference also emphasized education that identifies and counteracts violent cultural messages in American society and addresses the various needs and values of socioeconomic groups while promoting the development of humane attitudes. Speakers and workshops encouraged programs that educate animal-service and human-service professionals on the common roots of violence, that raise public awareness and acceptance of the need to promote caring attitudes, and that develop a network of multidisciplinary, community-based personnel to counter violence and promote nurturing. Another emphasis was treatment programs that provide empathetic role modeling, provide safe outlets for expressing negative emotions, and build skill in expressing nurturing feelings.
