Although sex outside marriage has been consistently decried as a threat to monogamous morality, prostitution has not only persisted but has become brasher and more multifaceted.
Abstract
Why men buy and women sell sex has still remained enigmatic although some simple and other more complex answers can be identified. The questions to raise are: Are the prostitutes really in distress? What should society do to control this scourge, if it should consider it to be so? These issues, in themselves, are complex but the 'fallout' of sexually transmitted diseases is becoming a serious community health problem. All these dimensions of the phenomenon of prostitution call for thoughful analysis and pragmatic action. (Author abstract)
