This is an overview of some of the projects undertaken by the Police/Ethnic Youth Partnerships in 1999.
Abstract
Police/Ethnic Youth Partnerships endeavor to: (1) promote proactive and developmental activities relevant to ethnic youth/police relations; (2) manage crisis events and emerging issues; (3) promote partnerships between police, ethnic young people, and the non-government sector; and (4) publicize State/Territory activities and highlight "good practice" models. Different jurisdictions are attempting to fulfill these goals in various ways. New South Wales is working to develop a blueprint for linking corporate objectives, policies, and programs and youth-related activities at a local level and to promote greater coordination and planning of police/youth programs. Victoria is examining issues such as access to recreation and public space, lack of respect by police, and employment opportunities. South Australia has young people visit the police academy and experience "hands-on" activities. Northern Territory facilitates communication by providing information on policing issues to community based organizations. Tasmania is working to ensure that services are accessible for young migrants and refugees.
