This report describes the programs of the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office: inmate counseling; the work release/counseling and volunteer services of the Restitution Center; activities of the Classification Unit; and supervision activities.
Abstract
In addition to a description, statistics, the staffing pattern, and the necessity of the activity are provided for each program. Counselors assist inmates with a variety of problems and serve as liaisons with family members, court contacts, the community, and other staff within the facility. Program staff provides counseling services for the 186 inmates housed at the Correctional Facility. All sentenced inmates receive assessment and evaluation services. Library services decrease monotony and inmate boredom and thus help to maintain security and order within the facility. The Multnomah County Sheriff's Office contracts with two established female residential programs for work release services: Our New Beginnings and the Young Women's Christian Association. Program activity of the Restitution Center, which has a population capacity of 80 male inmates, involves the use of community volunteers. The emphasis of classification is to ensure safety for both staff and inmates and to contribute to the smooth operation of the facility. To enhance the supervision of clients, the Sheriff's Office implemented the use of 40 electronic bracelets in 1987. This program provides community alternatives and allows critical jail space to be used for the more dangerous offender. 1 figure and 1 table
